Carpet Cleaning & Maintaining Tips

Prolong the Beauty of your Carpets

There are 3 ways to prolong the beauty of your carpets.

  1. Regular Vacuuming
Regular and frequent vacuuming is an important element in good carpet care. Vacuuming is the way to remove loose soil and dirt that ruins carpet appearance. For best results, a vacuum cleaner with a beater brush (eg. Upright vacuum cleaners or those with a power head). Daily vacuuming is a good idea. However, if this schedule is not possible, then try to vacuum at least two or three times a week.
  2. Periodic professional cleaning
All carpets need to be professionally cleaned periodically, to remove the tiny particles of grit and soil that even vacuuming won’t remove. These damaging soils, plus other particles and dust make carpets look dull and dingy.
  3. Prompt clean-up of spills
Prompt clean-up of spills is another important factor in maintaining the beauty of your carpets.

How Often Should I Have My Carpets Cleaned?

To protect your investment and your health, carpets need to be cleaned every 12 months. When cleaned and maintained correctly, carpet life is significantly extended. So don’t be afraid to have your carpets cleaned every 12 months, even when they don’t appear to be particularly dirty. It’s the unseen soils, bacteria and allergens that cause the real damage both to your carpets and to your personal health.

Carpet Cleaning Frequently asked questions

Some regularly asked questions and answers to help you care for your carpets after we have cleaned them.

Q: How soon can I walk on my carpets?

Generally you can walk on them immediately. They will be damp so it is best to wear clean shoes, slippers or go barefoot. Try to keep traffic at a minimum, but if you do have to go in and out of the house then change shoes at the door.

Q: How long normally it takes for my carpet to dry?

The average drying time is 2.5 to 3 hours, but will be affected by type of carpet and weather conditions.

This depends on many factors. What cleaning system has been used, humidity, ventilation and temperature. It can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a whole day.

We can’t do much about humidity, but one thing that you can do is leave windows and doors open to increase ventilation. Or, if conditions warrant, you can turn on your heaters to accelerate the drying process.

Q: Why have pieces of plastic been placed under some of my furniture?

The pieces of plastic have been placed to protect your carpet while it is still damp. Some items of furniture may “bleed” their color into your carpet, leaving a permanent stain.

Timber oils/stains will do so, as will metal, terracotta or other earthenware products. It is important to leave the plastic in place until the carpet is thoroughly dry.

Q: Why have some furnishings not been put back onto my carpets?

Carpets dry faster if there are fewer objects in the air space immediately above them, EG: coffee tables, bed side tables, chairs etc. An empty room does dry faster, but we know that it is impossible to empty every room in a furnished home.

Therefore, we sometimes choose not to replace some furniture in an effort to speed up the drying process. If you need to replace the furniture that’s OK too, BUT please ensure that you don’t put timber, cane, wicker, cloth, leather, paper, and metal or earthenware items directly onto the damp carpet.

Cut some plastic strips from a garbage bag and place them under the bottom or legs of each object to act as a barrier. Flat bottomed furnishings such as filing cabinets, toy chests, and floor lamps should never be put immediately back, as this could trap moisture and cause carpet rot or mould staining.

Mats and rugs can also cause this as well as some dyes bleeding onto the carpet.

Q: Accidents Happen

Accidents happen, no matter how careful you are. Before you go reaching for the nearest commercially bought carpet stain removal can, please phone us for what you should or shouldn’t use on the stain. You may inadvertently make the stain a permanent one.

Q: Friends tell me they had their carpets steam cleaned, and the stains reappeared in a short while. Does this happen?

Yes, this can happen if the detergent is not rinsed properly. A professional carpet cleaner will pre-spray your carpet first, then rinse the pre-spray out, similar to a rinse cycle in a washing machine. This reduces the need for too much detergent.

Q: How often should I have my carpets cleaned?

Your carpets should be professionally cleaned every 12 months. When cleaned and maintained properly, the carpet life is extended. No damage will occur if carpets are cleaned correctly and on a regular basis. It is the unseen bacteria, soils and allergens that cause carpet damage.

Q: What about moving the furniture?

Our cleaning staff will move the following furniture before shampooing your carpets: sofas and lounge suites, tables, and beds on wheels. We do not move: bookcases, fish tanks, waterbeds, china cabinets, computers, and delicate or fragile items. Any thing that is easy and safe to remove, we move.

Q: What stains will be removed when I have my carpets cleaned?

A carpet spot is a substance which has adhered to the carpet fibres, but has not yet become set. A stain is more advanced, and has most probably become set. Stains are more difficult to remove than a spot. Sydney Local Cleaners carries a large range of stain removal solutions for the removal of coffee, tea, cola, urine, red wine, etc. If the stain has not set and become permanent, stain removal may be successful.
